A Walk in the Grass

This post was originally going to be called Lunch on the Grass, but since I wasn’t hunting, I decided for the title at the top instead.  I was on my way home from work on 9/29/2011 and saw something move in the grass on a vacant lot near my house.  I pulled over beside the road and carefully walked up over the little mound and there I spotted it.  Can you see it in the first image?  I wish I would have had my 70-200 mm lens so that I could have gotten a much better image.  It was still a pretty cool feeling to be able to get close enough with the lens that is my everyday lens (24-70 mm).  By the end of the images, you’ll see that it was actually “A Run in the Grass”.

Goldfinches on a Hummingbird Feeder

This was an unusual sighting in my opinion.  I don’t remember ever seeing any other kinds of birds come to our hummingbird feeders.  When this pair of  American Goldfinches showed up, I had to capture the image.  What made this more interesting was that they stayed there for at least 10 minutes, and walked around to each hole seeming to try to get some nectar.  I don’t think they ever did, but then a nice little conversation started up between them.

Hello darling.

Is this seat taken?

First Robin Sighting of 2010

I saw my first American Robin of 2010 on February 15, 2010.  I love that feeling of seeing the first one and knowing that Spring is on its way.  I think this is one of the earliest times I remember seeing one, and there was plenty of snow still on the ground.

Get your “Ducks” in a Row?

I’ve heard “Get your ducks in a row”, but I’ve never heard “Get your Geese in a row”.  Fun photo, and pretty good poses too.  These were taken in Narrows, Giles County, Virginia, on December 31, 2009.

Blue Sky Hawk

This hawk (sharp-shinned I think) was in our neighborhood on November 16th.  I was able to get quite a few photos from the car, but couldn’t quite get in a great position to get the best photo.  After taking several “acceptable” photos, I tried to get out of the car and move to a better angle…and yes, the hawk immediately took flight.  Oh well, this was the best one of the bunch.

Flashback Friday – Sharp-shinned Hawk

This sharp-shinned hawk sits atop a car in a Wal-Mart parking lot, waiting, and watching, for some little unsuspecting bird.  This was taken back in December of 2006.  I love the “stare” of this bird’s eyes.  I took this with a 55mm lens and was standing VERY close to it.  Awesome!  Have a great weekend.
